Jingle Bells
by James Pierpoint
Dashing thro the snow,
In a one-horse open sleigh,
O'er the hills we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
Oh what sport to ride and sing
A sleighing song to night.
Chorus:
Jingle bells, Jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what joy it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, Jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what joy it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride,
And soon Miss Fannie Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot,
He got into a drifted bank,
And we, we got upsot.
Chorus
A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away.
Chorus
Now the ground is white
Go it while you?re young,
Take the girls to night
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob tailed bay
Two forty as his speed.
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack, you?ll take the lead.
It is believed by many that James Pierpoint wrote "Jingle Bells" in Medford, Mass. Jingle Bells, one of the most famous American Christmas songs, was originally written for Thanksgiving! The author and composer of Jingle Bells was a minister called James Pierpoint. It is most often held he composed the song in for children celebrating his Boston Sunday School Thanksgiving. The song was so popular that it was repeated at Christmas, and indeed Jingle Bells has been reprised ever since. In Medford, Mass., it is said that James Pierpoint was inspired by the winter sleigh races down snow-filed Salem Street in Medford and wrote the song at the Simpson Tavern, a boarding house with the only piano in town, howeverJames Pierpoint was latter the organist at Savannah's [Georgia] Unitarian Universalist Church in 1857 when he copyrighted the song 'One Horse Open Sleigh,' a title later changed to 'Jingle Bells.'" James Pierpoint fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederates States!
