Thor's Hammer or Mjolnir

!
Norse Amulet

Those who worshiped the god Thor often wore pendants in the shape of his hammer which in fact had a name which was Mjolnir.  Widely popular in Scandinavia, they were used in Blóts and other sacral ceremonies, such as weddings. Mjolnir simply means "crusher," referring to its pulverizing effect.  It has been suggested that although the name reflects Mjolnir's awesome powers it might also allude to Thor's agricultural nature, as he was primarily worshiped by farmers.

This size is perfect for men but often worn by women as well. this piece is popular with reenactors and with weavers. The Vikings also used this type of brooch to fasten their capes and cloaks about their shoulders.  Many have been found in Norse graves.  It is perfect to pin a heavy shawl or cape.  We sell these to renaissance fair people as well and they have been a hugely popular. This is just what the men need for their great kilts! They are used frequently by our spinning and weaving customers to pin their shawls. The tongue pin part will slip through coarse or fine weave without leaving a big hole as some brooches of this kind do.  Do to its size and weight this design works best on a medium to heavy fabric.

Fahan Mura Cross

!

This splendid Celtic Cross was carved by James E. Boyle using the ancient cross of Fahan Mura  located in County Donegal, Ireland as his inspiration.  That stone slab cross dates from 650 A.D.  James created this finely, cast cross here in our studio over the sheep sheds and each is hand cast and signed by him. The knotwork is deeply carved and the back is plain and smooth.  It is a full two and 3/4 inches from the top  loop to the base and an inch and a  quarter wide. Medieval or Welsh Dragon Brooch

!
Wonderfully Carved

This a very detailed dragon carved by James E. Boyle of The Rams Horn.  It was hand cast in fine pewter and all the findings were hand soldered.  This brooch was signed by the artist.  The pin has a hinged pin and safety clasp. The animal called a dragon is like a winged crocodile with a serpent's tail; whence the words serpent and dragon are sometimes interchangeable. From the meaning a watcher we get the notion of one that watches; and from the meaning “to flash,” we connect the word with meteors. Swift, swift, ye dragons of the night:—that dawning May bare the raven's eye. The Greek word drakon comes from a verb meaning “to see,” to “look at,” and more remotely “to watch” and “to flash.” This dragon would love to flash for you and bring you luck.

Heavy Scottish Thistle Pin

!
Emblem of Scotland

The thistle has long been the emblem of Scotland and this pin should please any Scot, man or women.  Men can wear this on their bonnet but it is beautiful as a brooch on a vest or blazer as well!  This has some weight to it and would best be worn on heavier fabric. It is very nicely carved with allot of detail. The pin was hand cast in lead-free jeweler's pewter in our studio and polished to a warm, antique finish to bring out the detail. The findings are hand soldered and the hinged pin is secured by a safety clasp. This was reproduced from a period piece.

Sword and Targe, Celtic Horses Kilt Pin

!

With a strong Military Pin & Clasp

This is a very handsome, Celtic horse, sword and targe, kilt Pin.  The two handed broadsword was used by many Scots throughout history, most famous of these being William Wallace. Although heavier than other swords, the broadsword offers much more range and power. This kilt pin was hand cast in our studio.  This is a large, sturdy, kilt pin made to last a life time.  It has a heavy military-style pin and safety catch meant to hold well on a thick, wool kilt.  This is not like the cheap pins so often sold in shops that are more suited as ornamental pins to decorate a Lady's skirt. The classic zoomorphic, horse design after Bain, is a design also seen on several other Celtic pieces in The Rams Horn, Celtic line.  The design is deeply etched and crisply cast.  This Scottish style pin is hand cast in solid, lead-free, jeweler's pewter and signed by the artist. Inspired by the Pictish carvings of horses in Inverurie, Scotland, this is a timeless classic. The targe or round shield is cast in one piece on the broadsword so there are not pieces to come apart and the pin closure is hand soldered by the artist, James E. Boyle here in our studio. The targe is 1 and 1/4 inches and the sword measures almost 4 inches in length. This would make an ideal gift or piper's trophy. Please see our other listings for more Scottish and Celtic pewter?
