THE RAMS HORN STUDIO

This splendid Celtic Cross was carved by James E. Boyle using the ancient cross of Fahan Mura  located in County Donegal, Ireland as his inspiration.  That stone slab cross dates from 650 A.D.  James created this finely cast cross here in our studio and each is hand cast and signed by him. The knotwork is deeply carved and the back is plain and smooth.  It is a full two and 3/4 inches from the top  loop to the base and an inch and a quarter wide. The casting is in the finest jeweler's pewter and is lead free.  The Fahan Mura Cross is a perfect gift for a man or a women and is one of those special pieces that will be treasured for years.  This cross looks excellent on leather, silk cord or a silver chain.  It is old here without cord or chain. It is a suitable gift for the churchman in your life as well. Why not give one as a gift to a priest, pastor or minister you wish to honor. Crosses of this size are sometimes worn low on a long chain and called pectoral crosses.

In Monasterboice, County Louth, there is a Monastery which was founded by Saint Buite, who died in 521 AD and it holds this one of the finest High Crosses in Ireland. The Cross of Muiredach gets its name from an inscription at the base of the west face saying it was erected by Muiredach. The theme of the cross is Christ the King, Lord of the Earth.

The Celts are known for their intricate carvings of vines and plants as well as animals.  This cross is a lovely example of the winding knots or vines so often seen in Celtic and Norse art.

Each tiny cross is 7/8 inch tall. The crosses dangle from stainless French ear wires.  These are so lovely the photo just does not do them justice. These are light weight but not thin.  You can wear these all day long!

This is a very well made cross with a loop big enough for a chain or a cord.  It has five bosses in the center area that are raised and the rest is crisply-defined knotwork.  This cross feels nice in your hands and is popular with my Scandinavian and Celtic customers. The back of this cross is not detailed it has a rustic texture The cross is 1 and 7/8 Inches tall.

The  equal armed cross was very common  in ancient Cornwall and Wales. This cross necklace is hand cast in solid, lead free, jeweler's pewter.  The chain is stainless steel and 24 inches long.  This is a  light necklace that goes with any style clothing  This is a classic little pendant you will want to wear everyday.

This is a small copy of the Cross of the Scriptures or King Flann’s Cross. This is a small carved version of the Clonmacnois Cross and is a medium-sized version of this famous Irish Celtic Cross. This is the 9th century Celtic cross of King Flann, High King of Ireland and depicts St. Columba between two angels, the Last Judgement, Christ with Peter and Paul and the founding of the monastery with St. Ciaran and King Dermot. It is different on each side as the real one is. We offer this with a strudy, 24 inch ,stainless-steel chain with a silver wash.

This lovely carved piece depicts Mary Mother of Jesus and Mary Madeline at the foot of the cross during the crucifixion of Jesus. This is a reproduction of  Russian Orthodox piece cast in fine Jeweler's Pewter. The back is flat. There is a loop through the finial at the top for a cord or chain. Sold with a 24 inch silver washed chain.

This Cross has the same lovely, deep-etched, knot design on both sides. It hangs from a 24 inch stainless steel chain with a bright silver finish. We like it as it is detailed on both sides and when it flips as you move you are never showing a flat back-side.  The cross is 1 7/8 inches and made of lead-free jewelers pewter.  . The bail is cast in place so there is no jump link to come opened and this cross can easily be transfered onto a cord and worn that way.

This Trinity design taken from The Book of Kells. This brooch is both a pin and a pendant.  There is a loop on the back so it may be worn on a leather cord or chain if desired. This is a  wonderful bold pin cast in solid jewelers pewter which is 100% free of lead! This is an original piece by Beth and Jim Boyle of The Rams Horn.  The tryptic is a traditional image taken from an ancient Celtic Christian manuscript.  This is a well made pin with great detail and all findings are hand soldered.   The pin/pendant is 1 and 1/2 inches and is slightly  domed rather than being a flat targe!  

This Trinity design was taken from The Book of Kells an ancient Irish work made on the Island of Iona. This is a large 3  7/8 inch Celtic clasp meant for a cape or cloak.  The three eyelets on each side are provided to sew the clasp at the throat  of the cape.  We sell these to hand spinners, reenacters and Renaissance artisans and they are meant to endure hard wear without bending or breaking.  Many imported clasps can only be used on light fabric.  These are cast of the finest grade of lead-free jewelers pewter and are designed to work on heavy wool,  velvet or whatever. The discs are slightly domed and the piece has an antique finish as shown.

This extraordinary, carved, panel brooch was created by James E. Boyle using a ancient zoomorphic design on a Celtic Stone Cross for inspiration.  It is hand cast in lead-free jeweler's pewter in our studio and polished to a warm antique finish to bring out the detail. The findings are hand soldered and the hinged pin is secured by a safety clasp. This piece was signed by the artist, James E. Boyle.
